Small island developing states (SIDS) face similar development challenges caused and intensified by climate change. To counter this reality, it is important to learn from each other to meet islands’ ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The Climate Smart Resilient Island (CSRI) Initiative aims at making SIDS more resilient to future challenges by unlocking the potential of mutual learning and the climate finance resources necessary for the implementation of mitigation and adaptation projects.
The Initiative aims at providing a holistic approach for islands to address climate change while also ensuring a pathway to sustainable development. The goal is to transform islands into Climate Smart Resilient Islands – CSRI. This is particularly important since many SIDS are heavily affected by sea level rise, increasing heavy rain events, tropical cyclones, and storm surges.
With water security being one of the biggest threats facing small islands, the CSRI Initiative has developed a climate-resilient water security programme as part of the CSRI Readiness project in a collaborative process with SIDS, regional DAEs and GCF representatives. Any interested SIDS are welcome to join the process, and the Initiative invites organisations accredited to the Green Climate Fund (GCF) as implementing partners.
